"I believe it’s important to talk to teenagers with respect."
I believe it’s important to talk to teenagers with respect. In my experience teenagers respond much more positively when spoken to as young adults rather than young children.
I include explanations about why each technique or musical concept works, rather than just telling them to do what they’re told. I encourage them to ask questions, suggest other approaches and to bring in music they’re listening to or even writing, so I can answer their questions and help them understand the music better.
Music is very mathematical and includes lots of critical thinking and prioritising. I teach my students learning strategies, how to problem solve, how to stay calm and focused, and I often tell my students my job is to put myself out of a job. In theory, our goal is to established strong musical foundations and techniques, so they eventually no longer need me.
Lastly, it’s very beneficial for teenagers to have a self-driven pursuit to focus on, one that provides them with a true sense of ownership and accomplishment they can steer towards.
REASONS WHY PLAYING MUSIC IS GREAT FOR TEENS
Improves Cognitive Skills: Playing music can enhance brain development. It strengthens memory, improves concentration, and helps with problem-solving skills. Music also aids in learning languages and mathematical concepts through rhythm and patterns.
Boosts Emotional Intelligence: Learning music allows teenagers to express emotions in a healthy, creative way. It can be a form of emotional release and helps in understanding and managing their emotions better.
Promotes Discipline and Patience: Playing an instrument requires consistent practice and focus, which teaches teens how to set goals, work towards them, and practice patience. They learn the value of hard work over time.
Boosts Social Skills: Whether they’re playing in a band, orchestra, or with friends, teens who play music can develop strong social skills. They learn how to work as a team, communicate, and collaborate with others, which are valuable life skills.
Boosts Self-Esteem and Confidence: Mastering an instrument can give teenagers a sense of achievement and increase their confidence. Performing in front of others also helps build public speaking and performance skills.
Reduces Stress and Anxiety: Music has been shown to have a calming effect. Playing an instrument or simply listening to music can help reduce stress, anxiety, and even symptoms of depression, providing an emotional outlet.
Encourages Creativity: Music allows teens to explore their creativity. Composing music or improvising on an instrument can stimulate their imagination and foster creative thinking.
Enhances Academic Performance: Studies suggest that students who engage in music tend to perform better academically. Music helps in areas like math, reading, and even test-taking skills, likely because of the enhanced cognitive abilities it fosters.
